Rogue River - Upper - October 3rd, 2005
RECORDED:    60 °    FISHING: Great
October 3, 2005:  The River is still dead clear after the rains, and fishing has improved.  There are still some great holes that aren’t producing like they should, so fishing is still spotty.  Many of the fish I saw hooked yesterday were taking the fly on the first cast, or first few casts through the run.  Egg patterns were a must yesterday, as all but one adult steelhead had to have the egg.  Flows, temps, and counts remain the same.

Paul, a buffalo rancher from Bend Oregon, had the kismet of finding a large pod of cheerful steelhead in one pool.  Four hooked, three landed. Nice Work Paul!

Good Luck on the water……………….
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

October 1, 2005: Guided trips this week were spotty.  Solid fishing one day and tuff fishing the next.  Wow, what a concept that steelhead fishing can be work on some days.  Kenny Smith and his father-in-law Ron had a hard day of fishing, but managed to land a few.  Small droppers were key.  Kenny is the owner of Aspen Flyfishing Inc., and is a talented fly fisherman.  Southern Oregon resident Jeff Chudoba made the best of his time on the river landing many nice steelhead, and a few big ones too.  Jeff is one of the most creative fly tiers I know, look for pictures of his Agent Orange variations on this site soon. There is a pitter padder of rain right now.  This should wake up any picky steelhead for a day or two.  As well as move more fish up stream.

Salmon are on the redds.....

Flows:  The “Upper” has dropped again to a flow of 902 cfs.  What a great flow.  Boaters beware of dangerous rapids, lot of rocks to avoid at this flow.  The rapids that sink boats are not very impressive, just dangerous.  Wade anglers put your party caps on!

Row vs. Wade

River flows 1,500 cfs and up............advantage drift boat.
River flows 899 cfs and down..........advantage bank access.
River flows in between, duce............first serve.

The fish count is still a bit stale, but river traffic has been low.  Anglers that know the river should have no problems locating steelhead for the rest of the season.  If you are not familiar with the river, BUT, are familiar with dead drift techniques and can read water you are in.  There are plenty of fish in the river to have great days of fishing.  It’s just not a spoiling as last year.  The Upper River is blessed with oodles of public parks that allow access to miles and miles of top notch holding lies.

Rogue River - Upper - September 26th, 2005
RECORDED:    75 °    FISHING: Great
September 26, 2005 Weekend reports from Trophy Waters guide staff are encouraging.  The fishing was good for a number of people.  Must have flies included Trout Retriever’s in Black Lab #6 & #8 and egg patterns.  Plenty of salmon are spawning now and certain areas of the river require an egg pattern to hook fish.  An angler on Friday caught every fish (5) on a Trout Retriever, Black Lab.

Flows:  The “Upper” has remained steady at about 1,100 cfs for about a week now.  What a great flow.  Consider that this flow is about 25% of what the Deschutes flows.  Pretty safe and manageable for bank anglers.  A grave yard of stones for boat anglers.  Plenty of stuff to bring your boat to a complete stop.

Rogue River - Upper - September 23rd, 2005
RECORDED:    0 °    FISHING: Great
September 23th update: The river has dropped even more to 1,100 cfs.  The fish tally over Gold Ray remains stale.  Trophy Waters Guide Staff is still hooking fish at a respectable rate on float trips.  Today’s rain should be an added bonus for the “bite”.

September 19th update:  A quick update that the river was dropped the last two days and is now at 1,300 cfs.  It is a whole new river from a week ago,  to bank anglers.

Row vs. Wade
River flows 1,500 cfs and up............advantage driftboat.

September 17th update:
What a difference a day makes!! And two skilled anglers too.

Ooopppsss…………………look out………..someone bumped into the light switch.  The Rogue heated up like a Vegas Craps Table yesterday.  One of Trophy Waters guides hooked over a dozen adult steelhead yesterday with practiced Rogue River anglers Paul Svendsen and Brother Alex.  He said Agent Orange was a must, and a # 10 copper nymph with rubber legs was solid too.  Stop by the store for the steelhead's most recent  fly selections.

Might be a fresh wave of fish upstream, or the wee bit of rain might have had the “steelhead catnip” result on the bite.  Also the river has dropped from 1,800 cfs to 1,500 cfs.  Making much more access to the “holes” for wade and boat fisherman.

With the bite back on and the Salmon starting to spawn, great fishing is in the making.

Good luck on the water………  the time is now………………….

9/16/2005
Fishing on the Upper Rogue River remains quietly pedestrian.  Consider that hooking a couple of adult steelhead in a day is not considered “hot” fishing on the Rogue ( I am not sure why?).  So, if you are not familiar with this area maybe mediocre fishing is more than enough action to head this way.  I’ll take a steelhead a day, any day!!

Most guided trips so far this month have produced multiple hook ups for both anglers in the boat.  Some days as many four or five, hooked.  Not landed. Some tremendous cutthroat have been showing up here and there, and with the salmon just starting to move on to the spawning redds the egg game could break loose any time now.

River traffic has been light, and the t-shirt weather stimulates the steelhead trance for midday anglers.

The current flow is 1,700 out of the dam, the temp has been in the mid 50’s, and the fish count is hovering around 5,000 fish over Gold Ray.

The fish are spaced out from Tou Velle Park all the way up to the hatchery.

Good luck on the water……………………

Rogue River - Upper - September 1st, 2005
 FISHING: Good
Fishing is still "good" by most rivers standards.  Sounds funny to an out of Towner to hear that hooking two steelhead for a day is slow.  But in Rogue terms the fishing has been tuff for the last week.  Some of the more natural patterns have been key to locating steelhead that are picky.

Try fishing "Trout Retrievers" in black or brown, "October Phatass", "Princess", and of course don't head to the river with out the Agent.

Today marks the start of fly only season, so no more split shot for the next sixty days.  Be sure to use heavy flies at current flows for both swinging and nymphing.

Good Luck on the Water................

August 8th update:
I guided two anglers yesterday with solid fishing skills.  They both hooked and landed adult steelhead.  Agent Orange, and a red Copper Swan were the two flies that worked for certain.  Some fish escaped before cross examination.

We fished wet flies on sinking lines to start the day and caught some nice trout, but no big guys turned on our traditional offerings.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Upper Rogue continues to get waves of summer steelhead.  Pressure on the river is surprisingly high already.  Lots of bank fishers and boat traffic too.  But………….there are already over 4,000 steelhead over Gold Ray dam (the upper 30 miles.).  Remember in the dark years when this was a whole seasons worth?

The river is at a great flow of 1800 cfs, with a temp of about 50 degrees out of the dam.  That is a bit chilly for swinging flies on floating lines in the morning.  Try sink tips (type 3 is a good one), or a full sink line. With the high day time heat, evening water temps in the evening can get to over sixty degrees!!  Now that is perfect conditions for fishing a dry fly for a summer steelhead.  Give it a try some time, it is very exciting to witness a dry fly take for summer steelhead.

For maximum production stick with a two fly set up and an indicator.  Try Agent Orange or a Sept’Ober Soft Hackle with a smaller dropper. The Copper Swan is always a good bet for a small drop fly.

The best bank access is at Tou Velle Park, Rogue Elk Park, Casey Park, and McGregor Park.  Pick the location closest to home and go for it.
