Rogue River - Upper - July 20th, 2005
 FISHING: Good
The temperatures, flows, and fish counts are all in line for catching summer steelhead in the Upper Rogue River right now.  Yes, yes, yes this is an early arrival for this many fish!!!  2,200 steelhead over Gold Ray Dam right now.  That is a number of fish consistent with the end of August on most years.

Traditional methods and dead drift methods are both good right now.  The fish are spread out, bright chrome, and smok’n hot fighters right now.  There are enough fish in the normal spots to find a few hook ups. I have been shocked at how many anglers are already fishing for the early arriving summer chrome.

Agent Orange, Sept’Ober soft hackles, Copper Swans, and Olive R.L. Copper Nymphs have been good nymphs.

Hilton’s, Skunks, and Twitcher’s have been good swing flies.

Good luck on the water……………..

Rogue River - Upper - June 9th, 2005
 FISHING: Good
June 9th: The Upper Rogue River is at a great flow right now.  The creeks are adding noticeable amounts of flow and some of them are adding color too. The Rogue from Dodge down is a cloudy green as of today.  Dodge up to Shady Cove in nice and clear.

The trout fishing is worth your time right now on the river below Casey Park.  Dry fly fishing below Shady was lack luster yesterday.  The hatches were great but surface fishing was not.  Swinging wet flies near the surface on slow sinking lines was very effective for small resident trout.  Nymphing I suspect would be a great way to fish the riffles too.  A three or four weight rod is perfect for these small trout.

It’s early for summer steelhead, but a few are around.  Try Swinging a favorite wet fly right now and enjoy the rainbow trout, or maybe a large cutthroat, you’ll catch while waiting for the occasional steelhead to find your fly.

Jon Hazlett landed a 17” inch Cutthroat while fishing Tou Velle in this manner.  He was fishing a black marabou pattern.

Klamath Lake - June 7th, 2005
 FISHING: Good
Ken Stringer, of Medford, has reported good fishing success at Klamath Lake already this season.  He Fished Pelican Bay (Rocky Point) on Memorial Weekend from his pontoon boat and landed three native trout 20 inches or better.  A standard assortment of trout nymphs were fished in tandem with leeches and damsels.  Full sinking line and a 12ft. leader.

It is still early for the prime concentrations of fish in the Rocky Point area, but timing the early part of this can be some fast action compared to the later part of the season.

Thanks for the info Ken, don't hook'em all.

Rogue River - Upper - June 4th, 2005
RECORDED:    71 °    FISHING: Great
The Holy Water is on full blast.  Catching will tetter-totter back and fourth with outbursts of bugs hitting the water and fish having adequate stomach space to store them.  Last night provided ample rise activity, lots of bugs, but the fish that were landed had gut aches for certain. Stuffed to the gills.

Don’t forget about the almost thirty miles of untouched trout water below the Holy Water.  Not a hog fishery, but lots of action for rainbow trout and cutthroat too.

Good luck on the Water…….

May 31st:

The Holy Water is loaded with the Big Bugs now.  LOADED!!  Fishing will get better with the first hot day, to get them flying recklessly in the summer winds.  Consider a different approach on the Holy Water than other Salmon Fly Hot Spots.

Search the water  with your eyes, NOT your flies.

This is a “picky fish” fishery and an angler is better off letting a fish get comfortable rising, and then presenting to it, with stealth.  Don’t “overcast” and occasional riser.  Random beating of the water doesn’t work as well here.

Try one tippet size smaller than you are use to at other Salmon Fly hot spots.

Manzanita Lake - June 1st, 2005
 FISHING: Great
I fished here for two days at the end of May with a small assembly of pals.  Fish were taken on midge and bobber.  Clear lines and small flies were also worth a lap.  By far the most exhilaration was stalking cruising brown trout in the shallows.  Many 15 to 18 inch brown were lunging with renegade hunger for big ant patterns.  Sight fishing around the edges proved to be the most productive, and the visual satisfaction of the walk, stalk and hook was worth every mosquito bite.  Great camping facilities and hard to believe natural beauty were just added bonuses to the trip.  If you haven’t tried this lake, make the drive.

Good Luck on the Water…………….

Rogue River - Upper - April 15th, 2005
 FISHING: Fair
1,000 steelhead have come over the dam since the first of the month.  Even though that a 1,000 “fresh” fish to the count, it doesn’t mean that the steelhead will be bright.

Most fish caught will be dark.  That all being said…………..the river is still worth fishing if you enjoy pulling on resilient fish.  Good numbers of winters are spread out in the upper river and people are getting hook-ups on a daily basis.

Not prime by Rogue standards. But still decent fishing none the less.

Good luck on the water……

Rogue River - Upper - March 25th, 2005
 FISHING: Great
March 25th, 2005:  The count today is 7,095 steelhead over the dam.  About 350 fish a day are coming to the Upper 30 miles of river right now.  Egg patterns have been a bit less productive with the arrival of bait fishermen from every river in Oregon.  Some stellar etiquette too.  Go with Agent Orange, Copper Swan, Sept'Ober Softhackles.  You get the Idea, stay buggy right now and you'll get your fish.  And, yes, I’m saying to stay buggy for the WINTER STEELHEAD.

Good luck on the water.............

March 23, 2005:  The River is still producing steelhead on a fly at current flows.  Harry Piper called today with a report of a 29 ½ inch steelhead that took him a half mile down stream.  And he landed it.  Way to go Harry!!  It was a bright , wild, hen.  He also had a fish of the same size jump twice right at him after setting the hook.  Not so fortunate on that one.

Todd Baker managed four hook-ups on a guided trip and landed two steelhead, including his first ever winter steelhead on a fly. Copper Swans were the ticket for Todd, and Harry was fishing some big rubber legged creatures that he tied himself after taking a class at Trophy Waters.

We have had rains on Monday night and Tuesday night, and the river is still CLEAR!!

Flows are great for floating or wading from the parks right now.

Good luck on the water………………………….

Here are some photos from the last day of February. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,

The Red Copper Swan and the Winter Steelhead Egg were effective patterns.

Winter steelhead are around in respectable numbers in the Upper Rogue River, the Applegate River, and the Illinois River.  Water conditions are clearer than the air we are breathing.  Stick with summer time presentation, and summer time tippet size.  Hit the pools where the sun cannot reach the bottom, and be very, very qu-why-it….

March Browns will be hatching in good numbers for the next few weeks for some good trout fishing on the main river below the hatchery on down.  Over cast, and drizzly days are certainly best for hatch activity.  Look for hatches around mid day below areas of fast riffle water.  March brown nymphs are “clingers” and love fast riffles.

We are now getting consistent fishing reports from the Upper Rogue River

Rogue River - Upper - March 11th, 2005
 FISHING: Great
March 11th: Short evening trip to the river provided no grabs for me and another local area guide.  He had noted that two evenings in a row winter steelhead had taken his swinging fly.  I was glad to contribute to being able to break the streak…………….

ANYWAY………….I am updating the fishing report to alert you to get out to the river.  The evening water temperature was FIFTY degrees.  Yes FIFTY, and the holding areas are shallow, and the fish are coming in at a rate of about one hundred and fifty steelhead a day over Gold Ray Dam.

This will last for about three more weeks, or until the rains come.

Scroll down for equipment, and fly recommendations.  Photos of last weeks fishing are also below.

Good Luck on the water…………………………….FIFTY DEGREES!!!

March 8th:
As of the 5th of March the fish count is 3,870 winter steelhead over Gold Ray dam.  This represents the first big push and tells us that the Steelhead will come up river regardless of current water level.  The Upper thirty miles should see at least 6,000 more winter steelhead in the next 21 days.  Now is the time to get after’em, the winter fish don’t hang out in the river for an extended period like our summer fish.

Scroll down for equipment, and fly recommendations.  Photos of last weeks fishing are also below.
