Rogue River - Upper - February 7th, 2004
 FISHING: Great
For anyone willing to put their snow-board or skis away for a day, tune in.

Winter Steelhead are cutting their saltwater sabbaticals short and returning home early.  These plump silver streaks are occupying the well know pools in the Grants Pass area of the Rogue River and the Applegate River.  A few reports of winter chrome above Gold Ray are coming in as well. Over 600 winter steelhead have cleared the dam already.

Don't be fooled by imposters!!  If you hook a colored up steelhead that fights like a Mann Lake cutthroat, you have just found a summer steelhead that just cannot get enough of the freshwater life style.  Any fish with large girth and a bad attitude towards your sharp hook is likely a winter run, regardless of color.  A bright fish is almost a given, regardless of athletic ability and stamina.

If the big flows of the Upper Rogue do not fit your style, try a trip to the Applegate River.  This river has lots of private and public access.  It is small, and runs as clear as the Metolius.  If hooking steelhead in small water appeals to you, the Applegate might be your cup of tea.  With consistent clear flows it’s not as big of a risk, to “blow-out”, for people traveling long distance, and, it is full of steelhead right now!!

Are you a winter trout bum?  The next two months may very well be the best of the year for mayfly hatches on the Rogue River.  Blue Winged Olives (BWO’S) in sizes #18-#14 and March Browns in size #12 can make for some fast and furious trout fishing. The section between hatchery and Rogue Elk Park is excellent for drift boaters.  Look for hatches around 1:00 pm as of current.

River Flow: As of 12/26 the river level is 1,677 cfs out of the dam. The temp is 42.6 degrees out of the dam.

Humble Unbiased Commentary:    Keep an eye on the storms.  The Rogue is full of steelhead and is fishing good when the flows are 2,000 cfs or lower out of the dam.  Steelhead were re-run 12/24 at Tou Velle State Park.  1,500 steelhead were put back into the river. So if you don’t mind hooking Marcia Brady or Gilligan, re-run fishing can be fast and furious. And fun.

Trophy Waters Store Chat:   Head guide Matt York has been hooking steelhead on the swing.  This is a good way to cover more water when the river is high.  He is using a heavy sink tip to slow down his swing and keep the fly deep.


Fish Counts: As of November 25th 14,450 steelhead over Gold Ray dam. Coho over Gold Ray as of the 25th 11,567, and 7,652 Coho have made it to the hatchery. After fly season starting Nov. 1st there is still a "no bait" reg on most of the upper river (Rogue Elk Park Down Stream). The “800” number on your steelhead tag is the best way to report illegal bait fisherman. As of current the State Police have been quick to respond to such reports.



Agent Orange and the Sept'Ober Soft hackle have been our best flies to nymph fish with, and the hot droppers have been copper nymphs, skip nymphs in both colors. The fall salmon are gone from the redds but egg patterns can still be very productive on all sections of the river. Steelhead are all the way up river in good numbers. With the absence of live salmon to alert you about their precious spawing areas, take great care not to trounce through the redds of spawning salmon.

River Flow: As of 12/17 the river level is 1,700 cfs out of the dam. The temp is 43.6 degrees out of the dam.

Humble Unbiased Commentary: Whew…………the river “blew” out for two days and I lost my internet connection for three days. So, the major change in the river right now is the increased flow out of the dam. May seem big compared to 900 cfs, but consider that one of my most productive flows out of the dam is 1,900. Steelhead were re-run today at Tou Velle State Park. So if you don’t mind hooking Marcia Brady or Gilligan, re-run fishing can be fast and furious. And fun.

Humble Unbiased Commentary: The Rogue is still fishing exceptionally well for steelhead of all sizes, and lots of fly fishers are staying at home because of the cold. I realize that if you are reading this report right now while sitting in Minnesota, my use of the word cold may not match your definition.  The water level and clarity are both perfect as of current. There is a good number of large fish in the upper river right now. With the absence of pressure in the appropriate pools and runs, some anglers are reporting hook-ups on the swing again. Yes, on the swing. Sink-tips are a must with unweighted flies.

Many anglers are still hooking and landing steelhead in the Tou Velle area like crazy from the bank. This public access is a tremendous resource that is absent from many rivers.

November 20th and 21st were productive for the Trophy Waters guide staff( no photo‘s, sorry. Matt and his wife were busy with the birth of their first child on Monday!!),

This weekend the 23rd was a productive play day. Photo(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8)

River Flow:  As of 11/12 the river level is 900 cfs out of the dam.  The temp is 42 degrees out of the dam.

November 15th Update: I talked with Matt York last night, Trophy Waters senior guide. He and guide Buba Lipe were both on the river yesterday and had excellent fishing with Ron Villa‘s group(1,2 These photo are from a trip eariler this fall). Matt noted that the fish were “nymphy” and not “eggy”. Meaning that the steelhead were taking insect type patterns better than the egg patterns. Matt reported that most of the steelhead they hooked were in the 20” inch range and that the other boat with Buba landed steelhead 24” inches and bigger!!

Matt also spent a morning off swinging flies. Yes, SWINGING. He hooked but did not land a steelhead, and witnessed a fellow fisherman land two steelhead on a heavy sink tip.

The best fly pattern available is useless with out a comfortable fly fisher using it. Also, it you hate nymph fishing for steelhead, I still recommend trying Nymphing for steelhead. If you must swing, try to locate an oversized head during a peak hatch period, or , strap on the sink-tip line and go for the slow and low presentation.


WARNING: Fishing the Upper Rogue River with a swinging fly right now can make you cry, uncontrollably. Oh man……..its been tough to get a grab. Admittedly, however, less and less time has been put into this method by our guide staff.
